As the weather warms up and South Africans venture outdoors more often, there are a few things you need to keep in mind to protect yourself from the sun’s harmful rays.

September is proudly Heritage Month in SA and there’s no better way to celebrate our diverse heritage than by embracing our outdoor lifestyle – spending time at the beach or socialising with friends around a braai. However, exposing our skin to the sun also means putting ourselves at risk of developing skin cancer.

The sun’s rays contain UVA and UVB light, both of which have been linked to increased risks in developing skin cancer, no matter what colour your skin is. The Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) suggests the following tips to help keep your skin safe this summer.

  • Avoid the sun between the hours of 10am and 3pm, when the sun’s rays are at their harshest.

  • If you are outside, cover up using light-coloured clothing, and wear a hat and UV-blocking sunglasses.

  • Remember that everyone is at risk. Darker skins tones are just as prone to sun damage as lighter ones.

  • Use the right sunscreen – pick one that’s broad spectrum (which protects against both UVA and UVB) with a minimum protection of SPF30.

  • Apply sunscreen at least 20 minutes before sun exposure and re-apply every two hours, after swimming and sweating.

  • Keep a close eye on any changes to your skin and get any moles, dark marks or discolouration checked by your GP or a dermatologist. Everyone should be checked for skin cancer annually.

Remember, your best defence against skin cancer is early detection and prevention, so stay safe and be “sun-smart”.
