October 2011 Economic updatesThe world is facing a dichotomy: whether to save money to weather the storm ahead or to spend like there is no tomorrow in order to prevent another recession. While in the long term collective savings are good, in the short term sudden increases in savings can actually harm economic growth. This is known as the paradox of thrift, a phrase coined by famous economist John Maynard Keynes. Locally we are facing the impact of continuous global turmoil as our economic growth figures fall significantly. The only upside for people with debt is that interest rates will stay low for longer – so it is probably best to ignore Keynesian economics and to use these low interest rates to reduce personal debt.
