Cybercrime is one of the fastest growing threats to consumers' money. According to the Norton Cyber Security Insights Report, $172 billion was stolen from 978 million consumers in 20 countries around the world in 2017. The report also states that 8.8 million South Africans were the target of online or cybercrime in the year under review.

These statistics are scary, that's why we’d like to keep you informed and share information to help you protect your wealth from criminal activity. The South African Banking Risk Information Centre (SBRIC) urges us all to take the following steps to protect ourselves from phishing and vishing scams:

  1. Do not click on links or icons in unsolicited emails.
  2. Do not reply to these emails. Delete them immediately.
  3. Do not believe the content of unsolicited emails blindly. If you’re worried about what is alleged, use your own contact details to contact the sender to confirm.
  4. Type in the URL (uniform resource locator or domain names) for your bank in the internet browser if you need to access your bank’s webpage.
  5. Check that you are on the real site before using any personal information.
  6. If you think that you might have been compromised, contact your bank immediately.
  7. Create complicated passwords that are not easy to decipher and change them often.
