As we move through the different phases of our lives so our financial needs and goals change. The financial plan that was relevant when just starting out is not necessarily going to meet your needs later in life. In his book "The Behavior Gap" author Carl Richards has a chapter entitled "Plans are worthless". His point is not that you should not have a plan, but that it is the process of planning that is more important than the outcome.
He argues that while the process of financial planning is vital, we confuse it with the supposed end product: a financial plan. "A plan assumes that you know what is going to happen even though you don't. By contrast, planning in its truest sense is a reality-based process that allows for life's unpredictability," explains Richards. Your plan evolves as you evolve.
