Give gifts that last a lifetime

While your children may want the latest gadget or toys on the market, we suggest a number of invaluable gifts that they’ll appreciate forever.

Make sure you show your children just how much you care by giving them gifts that last a lot longer than the holidays.

1. The gift of financial education. It’s never too early to learn about the ins and outs of financial planning. Teaching your children, for example, how a unit trust works will stand them in good stead in adulthood.

2. The gift of time. The festive season’s all about spending time with your loved ones and although work commitments may often take precedence during the year, it’s vital to teach your children the value of a work-life balance. Why not create a series of vouchers which can be customised for each child such as a sporting evening for your star player or a cooking class for your budding baker. Not only will you get to spend one-on-one time with them, but it also encourages and shows your support for their passion.

3. The gift of financial security. It may seem like a long way off, but making sure your child’s future is secure is one of the most important gifts you could give. Investing in a product for your child’s future, be it a trust, an investment for the tertiary education or even something to help them buy their first car has more longevity than the latest princess doll.

4. The gift of giving back. Children often associate the festive season with getting ‘stuff’. Why not show them that it can also be about giving? Sign the family up for a local soup kitchen or get creative, making a Santa’s Shoebox. Instilling a philanthropic mindset in your child now will ensure that they always consider the needs of the less fortunate, especially in the festive season.

One of the best things about year-end is that most of us get our pay cheques early and for those lucky individuals who receive a 13th cheque, the December salary comes with a little sweetener.

The festive season is listed on the Holmes and Rahe Stress Scale among the 43 most stressful life events. It’s time to change our children’s expectations and take the pressure off us as parents.

Economic uncertainty and the political tumult have driven demand for offshore investment products to an all-time high. Concerns around currency volatility and the local market limitations, in terms of size and exposure to wider global industry, have also contributed to a reluctance to take on risk.
